Durable Brickwork & Retaining Walls Installed by Local Experts

Brickwork and garden walls are an essential part of creating structure, privacy and long-lasting definition in your outdoor space. Whether you want a small decorative feature or a strong retaining wall, professionally built brickwork adds quality and character to your garden. At SJS Landscaping & Gardening, we design and construct brickwork and garden walls across Gloucester and Gloucestershire, using solid materials and proper building techniques to ensure strength, durability and a tidy finish.

From neat edging around patios to full boundary walls, raised beds and retaining structures, we can help shape your garden in a way that looks great and lasts for many years.

We work with a range of brick types including standard facing bricks, engineering bricks for load-bearing and retaining walls, and reclaimed bricks where you want a character finish that matches an older property. Every wall is built on proper concrete strip foundations, with the depth and width calculated to suit the wall height, soil conditions and intended load. We finish with coping stones or capping to protect the top of the wall from rainwater penetration — a detail that significantly extends the lifespan of any garden wall.

Our Brickwork & Garden Wall Services

Garden Walls & Boundary Walls

We build garden walls and boundary walls in a range of heights, styles and brick types to suit your property. Whether you need a low decorative wall to frame a patio, a taller boundary wall for privacy, or a front garden wall to improve kerb appeal, every wall is built on proper foundations with coping stones on top to protect against weather damage. We can match the brickwork to your existing property for a seamless, integrated look.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are essential for sloped or tiered gardens — they hold back earth, prevent soil erosion and create level, usable areas for patios, lawns or planting. We build retaining walls using engineering-grade bricks or concrete blocks with appropriate foundations, drainage gravel backfill and weep holes to manage water pressure behind the wall. This groundwork is critical for structural stability and long-term performance.

Raised Beds & Planter Walls

Raised brick planters add structure, height and planting depth to your garden — ideal for flowers, herbs, vegetables or ornamental shrubs. We build them in single or double skin brick, with proper foundations and drainage holes to keep soil healthy. Raised beds also make gardening easier for anyone who finds bending difficult, and they create a clean, defined border between planted and paved areas.

Brick Edging for Patios & Paths

A neat row of brick edging along patios, paths and driveways creates a crisp, defined border that holds paving or gravel in place and prevents spreading. We can use matching or contrasting bricks to frame the edge — a small detail that makes a big difference to the overall finish of any landscaping project.

Rebuilds, Repairs & Restorations

Cracked, leaning or crumbling walls are not just unsightly — they can be a safety hazard. We can repair localised damage by cutting out and replacing individual bricks, repoint tired mortar joints, or fully rebuild sections that are beyond repair. For older properties, we can source matching bricks (including reclaimed stock where needed) so the repaired wall blends in with the original brickwork rather than standing out as a patch job.

Decorative Features

From brick steps and entrance pillars to built-in seating, barbecue surrounds and archways, brickwork can be used to create practical and attractive features that add character to your garden. We work with you to design features that complement your existing landscaping — whether you're going for a traditional cottage feel or a clean, modern look.

Why Choose Us for Brickwork & Walls?

Professional Garden Wall Construction for Homes in Gloucester

Strong, Reliable Construction

Every wall starts with concrete strip foundations dug to the correct depth for the wall height and soil conditions. We use frost-resistant bricks where exposed to the elements, engineering bricks for load-bearing retaining walls, and mortar mixed to the right strength for each application. This is what separates professional brickwork from DIY jobs that crack or lean within a few years.

Neat, High-Quality Finish

Straight courses, consistent joint widths, clean mortar profiles and level coping stones — the details matter, and they're what make a garden wall look professionally built rather than thrown up in a hurry. We take pride in a clean, sharp finish on every project, whether it's a simple raised bed or a full boundary wall.

Perfect for All Garden Types

We work across all property types — Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, modern new builds and rural cottages. We can source matching bricks, reclaimed stock for period properties, or contemporary smooth-faced blocks for modern garden designs. If you're not sure what will suit your home, we'll bring options and talk you through what works best.

Local, Friendly Team

We're based in Gloucester and work across Gloucestershire every day. That means quick site visits, honest advice about what your garden needs, and a reliable team that shows up when we say we will. We keep the site tidy throughout the job and clear all waste when we're finished.

How We Build Garden Walls & Brickwork

Every brickwork project we carry out follows a structured process to make sure the finished wall is straight, stable and built to last for decades.

Step 1 — Site Visit & Assessment

We visit your property, discuss what you need the wall for — whether it's a boundary, retaining wall, raised bed or decorative feature — and assess the ground conditions, access and any drainage requirements. We provide a detailed, fixed quote before any work begins.

Step 2 — Setting Out & Foundations

We mark out the wall line precisely using string lines and profiles. A trench is dug to the correct depth for the wall height and soil type, then filled with a concrete strip foundation. For standard garden walls up to 1 metre, foundations are typically 300mm deep and three times the width of the wall. Retaining walls and taller structures need deeper, wider foundations.

Step 3 — Below-Ground Courses

The first few courses of brickwork are laid below ground level on top of the foundation. For retaining walls, engineering bricks are used below ground for their strength and water resistance. A damp-proof course (DPC) is inserted where the wall meets ground level to prevent moisture rising through the brickwork.

Step 4 — Building Up

Bricks are laid course by course using the chosen bond pattern — stretcher bond for single skin walls, English bond or Flemish bond for double skin walls. Every course is checked for level and plumb. Piers (brick columns) are built in at regular intervals on longer or taller walls to add structural strength and prevent leaning.

Step 5 — Drainage (Retaining Walls Only)

For retaining walls, free-draining gravel is packed behind the brickwork and weep holes are left at regular intervals along the base to allow water to escape. This prevents hydrostatic pressure from building up behind the wall — the most common cause of retaining wall failure.

Step 6 — Coping & Finishing

Coping stones or capping bricks are fitted along the top of the wall to shed rainwater and protect the brickwork from frost damage. Mortar joints are finished with a clean profile — typically a bucket handle or weatherstruck finish — and any excess mortar is brushed off before it sets.
Most garden walls take 2 to 5 days depending on size and complexity. We remove all waste and leave your garden clean and tidy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Brickwork & Garden Walls in Gloucester

If you’ve got questions about our services, the process or what to expect, the FAQs below should help – and if you need anything else, just give us a call.

In most cases, yes. We can source facing bricks, stock bricks and reclaimed bricks that closely match the colour, texture and size of your existing walls. For older Gloucester properties, matching the original brickwork is especially important — we take the time to find the right bricks rather than settling for something that doesn't blend in. If an exact match isn't available, we can often use a combination of careful sourcing and mortar colour matching to get very close.

Yes — every wall needs a concrete strip foundation to prevent movement, cracking and collapse. The depth and width of the foundation depends on the height of the wall and the soil conditions. As a general rule, foundations should be at least three times the width of the wall and a minimum of 150mm deep for low walls, increasing for taller structures. We include foundations as standard in every brickwork project.

Yes — retaining walls are specifically designed for sloped gardens. We excavate into the slope, build on a level foundation, and step the wall to follow the gradient where needed. Drainage behind the wall is essential — we use free-draining gravel backfill and weep holes to prevent water pressure building up behind the brickwork, which is the most common cause of retaining wall failure.

Yes — we can safely dismantle and remove old, damaged or leaning walls before rebuilding or upgrading them. All waste is cleared from site. If the existing bricks are in good condition and you want to reuse them (for example, to maintain a period look), we can clean and relay them where appropriate.

The cost depends on the wall height, length, thickness, brick type and amount of groundwork needed. As a general guide, a single skin brick garden wall typically costs around £150 per square metre including materials, mortar, foundations and labour. Double skin walls cost more — typically £180 to £250 per square metre. Retaining walls are generally more expensive due to the deeper foundations and drainage work required. We provide a detailed quote after visiting your property.

n most cases, no — garden walls under 1 metre high adjacent to a highway, or under 2 metres elsewhere, don't usually require Building Regulations approval and are treated as permitted development. However, retaining walls holding back significant amounts of earth, or walls forming part of a boundary with a public road, may need structural calculations and approval. We can advise you on whether your project is likely to need approval during the quoting stage.

We work with a range of brick types depending on the project. Facing bricks are used for visible walls where appearance matters. Engineering bricks are stronger and more water-resistant, making them ideal for retaining walls, foundations and below-ground work. Reclaimed bricks are available for older properties where matching the original character is important. We'll recommend the right type for your project based on its purpose, location and the look you want.

A straightforward garden wall (for example, a 5-metre boundary wall at around 1 metre high) typically takes 2 to 3 days including foundations. Larger or more complex projects — such as tall retaining walls, stepped walls on slopes, or walls with decorative features — can take a week or more. We'll give you a clear timescale before any work starts.

Yes — if your wall is structurally sound but the mortar joints have cracked, crumbled or washed out, repointing can restore the look and weather resistance of the brickwork without rebuilding the whole wall. We carefully rake out the old mortar and apply fresh mortar to match the existing colour and profile. This is especially important on older walls where the mortar has deteriorated over decades of exposure to rain and frost.

A well-built brick wall with proper foundations and coping stones can last 50 years or more with minimal maintenance. The main enemies of garden walls are water penetration (which causes frost damage in winter) and poor foundations (which cause leaning and cracking). Both are prevented by correct construction in the first place — which is why we never skip the groundwork stage.

A garden wall is a freestanding structure used for boundaries, decoration, raised beds or privacy. A retaining wall is specifically designed to hold back earth on a sloped or tiered garden. Retaining walls need deeper foundations, stronger materials (typically engineering bricks or concrete blocks), and proper drainage behind the wall to manage water pressure. Both types of wall need professional installation, but retaining walls involve more structural consideration.
