Every brickwork project we carry out follows a structured process to make sure the finished wall is straight, stable and built to last for decades.
Step 1 — Site Visit & Assessment
We visit your property, discuss what you need the wall for — whether it's a boundary, retaining wall, raised bed or decorative feature — and assess the ground conditions, access and any drainage requirements. We provide a detailed, fixed quote before any work begins.
Step 2 — Setting Out & Foundations
We mark out the wall line precisely using string lines and profiles. A trench is dug to the correct depth for the wall height and soil type, then filled with a concrete strip foundation. For standard garden walls up to 1 metre, foundations are typically 300mm deep and three times the width of the wall. Retaining walls and taller structures need deeper, wider foundations.
Step 3 — Below-Ground Courses
The first few courses of brickwork are laid below ground level on top of the foundation. For retaining walls, engineering bricks are used below ground for their strength and water resistance. A damp-proof course (DPC) is inserted where the wall meets ground level to prevent moisture rising through the brickwork.
Step 4 — Building Up
Bricks are laid course by course using the chosen bond pattern — stretcher bond for single skin walls, English bond or Flemish bond for double skin walls. Every course is checked for level and plumb. Piers (brick columns) are built in at regular intervals on longer or taller walls to add structural strength and prevent leaning.
Step 5 — Drainage (Retaining Walls Only)

Step 6 — Coping & Finishing
