Resin Driveways in Gloucester & Gloucestershire

Modern, Low-Maintenance Resin Driveways in Gloucester

A resin bound driveway gives you the smoothest, most modern-looking driveway finish available — a seamless, weed-free surface with natural stone aggregate locked into UV-stable resin for a premium look that lasts 15–25 years with minimal maintenance. At SJS Landscaping & Gardening, we install resin bound driveways across GloucesterCheltenhamStroudCirencester and the wider Gloucestershire area, using professional-grade materials and proper base preparation for a finish that doesn’t fade, crack or lift.

Because resin bound surfaces are fully permeable — rainwater drains straight through into the base below — they’re SuDS compliant and don’t require planning permission regardless of driveway size. This is a significant advantage over impermeable options like tarmac or imprinted concrete, which need additional drainage or planning approval for front garden installations over 5 square metres.

Resin driveways are available in a huge range of natural stone colours and blends — from warm golds and buffs that complement Cotswold stone properties around Cirencester, to cool greys, silvers and charcoals that suit modern homes in Gloucester, Cheltenham and the surrounding estates. We also offer overlay installations onto existing solid tarmac or concrete — which can significantly reduce cost by avoiding full excavation.

Our Resin Driveway Services in Gloucester

Resin-Bound Driveway Installation

We install fully permeable resin bound driveways — where natural stone aggregate and UV-stable resin are mixed together in a forced-action mixer before being hand-trowelled onto a prepared base for a smooth, solid, seamless finish. This is the superior resin system: it's fully permeable (SuDS compliant), weed-free, frost-resistant, and lasts 15–25 years. Every installation starts with a strong, properly prepared base — either a new sub-base with porous tarmac or concrete, or an existing surface in good condition.

Wide Range of Stone Colours & Blends

Choose from dozens of natural stone aggregate blends in colours ranging from warm golds, buffs and terracottas to cool greys, silvers, charcoals and multi-tone mixes. Aggregate sizes typically range from 1–6mm, with smaller stones giving a finer, smoother finish and larger stones offering better drainage performance. We bring colour samples to your site visit so you can see and compare blends against your property's brickwork, stonework and surroundings before committing.

Edging & Border Options

Every resin driveway needs a solid edge restraint to contain the surface and give a clean, defined finish. We offer block paving borders, granite sett edging, brick edging, aluminium edge strips and concrete kerbs — depending on the look you want. A contrasting block paving border around a resin surface is one of the most popular combinations, adding a premium, defined frame to the smooth resin centre.

Repairs & Resurfacing

If your existing resin driveway has developed loose patches, cracks, fading or discolouration (common with older non-UV-stable installations or poorly mixed resin), we can assess the damage and either patch-repair specific areas or resurface the entire driveway with a fresh resin bound layer. If the original base is still solid, a full resurfacing overlay can restore the driveway to as-new condition at a lower cost than a complete rebuild.

Fully Permeable Surface

Resin bound driveways allow rainwater to drain directly through the surface and into the base below — eliminating puddles, reducing surface water run-off, and meeting SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) requirements. This means no planning permission is needed for resin bound driveways, regardless of size — a major practical and financial advantage over impermeable surfaces. For properties on Gloucestershire's clay-heavy Severn Vale, where surface water management is important, resin bound is an excellent long-term solution.

Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded — What's the Difference?

These are two completely different products — and the distinction matters.

Resin bound (what we install)

The aggregate and resin are mixed together before being applied and hand-trowelled onto the base. This creates a smooth, flat, fully permeable surface where every stone is coated and locked in place. Water drains through the surface. No loose stones. SuDS compliant. No planning permission needed. Lasts 15–25 years. This is the premium product.

Resin bonded (we don't recommend)

Resin is spread onto the surface, then loose aggregate is scattered on top and pressed into it. This creates a textured, rougher finish — similar to a tarmac-and-chip surface. It is not permeable (the resin layer underneath blocks water), stones can become loose over time, and it typically lasts only 10–15 years. It's cheaper, but the quality and longevity don't compare.

We install resin bound driveways exclusively because it’s the superior system — better drainage, better appearance, better durability, and fully SuDS compliant. If you’ve been quoted for a resin driveway elsewhere, it’s worth checking whether the quote is for bound or bonded, as the price difference reflects a significant quality difference.

How Does Resin Compare to Other Driveway Types?

Resin vs Other Driveway Types

Gravel

Resin uses the same natural stone aggregates as gravel but locks them into resin — giving you the same colour palette with a smooth, bound surface that doesn't shift, spread or need raking. Resin is the premium version of a gravel aesthetic. Gravel is significantly cheaper.

Block Paving

Block paving offers decorative patterns but has joints where weeds grow and blocks that can sink or shift. Resin is seamless, weed-free and typically requires less maintenance. Block paving is easier to repair in small sections.

Tarmac

Tarmac is cheaper and functional but offers no decorative appeal and is impermeable (needs drainage/planning). Resin gives you a premium look, permeability and no planning issues at a higher price point.

Imprinted Concrete

Imprinted concrete offers pattern options (cobble, slate, brick) that resin can't replicate. Resin offers a smoother, more contemporary finish and is permeable. Imprinted concrete needs resealing every 3–5 years; resin is lower maintenance.

How We Install a Resin Bound Driveway

How We Install a Resin Driveway

Site Visit & Quote

We assess your existing surface, measure the area, discuss aggregate colour and edging options, and provide a clear, itemised quote. If your existing tarmac or concrete is solid and in good condition, we may be able to overlay directly — saving significant excavation cost.

Base Preparation

If overlaying: the existing surface is cleaned, repaired (cracks filled, potholes patched) and primed for adhesion. If installing from scratch: we excavate, lay and compact a MOT Type 3 sub-base (permeable), and install a porous tarmac or concrete base layer on top — creating a solid, level, free-draining foundation.

Edge Restraints

Block paving borders, granite setts, aluminium strips or concrete edging are installed to contain the resin surface and define the driveway shape.

Mixing & Laying

The natural stone aggregate and UV-stable resin are measured precisely and combined in a forced-action mixer on site. The mixed material is then hand-trowelled onto the prepared base in a smooth, even layer (typically 15–18mm deep for domestic driveways). This step is weather-sensitive — it must be done in dry conditions above 5°C, with no rain forecast for the curing period.

Curing

The resin cures and hardens over 24–48 hours. Light foot traffic is usually fine after 12–24 hours. We recommend waiting 3–7 days before driving on the surface to allow full cure strength. We'll confirm exact timings based on weather conditions at the time of installation.

Clean-Up & Handover

All waste and equipment removed. Edges cleaned. Driveway inspected and handed over with aftercare advice.

Why Choose Resin for Your Driveway?

Stylish Resin Driveway Specialists for Homes in Gloucestershire

Premium, Modern Appearance

A resin bound driveway delivers a sleek, seamless, high-end finish that instantly lifts the kerb appeal of any property. The smooth surface and natural stone colours create a contemporary look that particularly suits modern and suburban homes across Gloucester, Cheltenham and the surrounding areas.

Low Maintenance

No weeds growing through joints (there aren't any). No loose stones to rake or sweep (they're bound into the resin). No resealing needed every few years (unlike imprinted concrete). An occasional pressure wash is all that's needed to keep a resin driveway looking fresh. It's one of the lowest-maintenance driveway options available.

Great Drainage

Resin bound surfaces are fully permeable — water drains through the surface into the base below rather than pooling or running off into the road. This eliminates puddles, reduces flood risk, and means no planning permission is needed (SuDS compliant). Particularly valuable for properties on flat ground in the Severn Vale where surface water drainage is a concern.

Long-Lasting & UV Stable

We use UV-stable resin exclusively, which prevents the yellowing, fading and discolouration that cheaper non-UV resins develop within a few years. A properly installed resin bound driveway with UV-stable resin lasts 15–25 years, maintaining its colour and structural integrity throughout.

Customisable Styles

Dozens of natural stone aggregate colours and blends — warm golds and buffs for Cotswold stone properties, cool greys and silvers for modern builds, multi-tone mixes for a natural look, or bold single-colour finishes for a statement entrance. Combined with your choice of edging (block, sett, brick, aluminium), every resin driveway is unique to the property.

Resin Driveways FAQs

If you’ve got questions about our services, the process or what to expect, the FAQs below should help – and if you need anything else, just give us a call.

A professionally installed resin bound driveway with UV-stable resin typically lasts 15–25 years. Lifespan depends on installation quality, base condition, traffic levels and exposure. With proper base preparation and UV-stable materials (which we use on every installation), colour retention and structural integrity are maintained throughout.

Not with UV-stable resin, which is the only type we use. Non-UV-stable resins (often used in cheaper installations) can yellow and discolour within 2–3 years, especially on lighter aggregate colours. UV-stable resin prevents this, keeping the colour true for the life of the driveway. If you're comparing quotes, always check whether UV-stable resin is specified — it's one of the biggest quality differentiators.

Often yes — if your existing tarmac or concrete is in solid, stable condition (no major cracks, no significant subsidence, no loose areas), we can apply resin bound surfacing directly over the top. This saves the cost and time of full excavation and new base installation. We assess the existing surface during your free site visit and advise honestly on whether an overlay will work or whether base work is needed. Block paving and loose gravel surfaces generally need removing before resin can be applied.

No — the natural stone aggregate texture provides good grip in both dry and wet conditions. Resin bound surfaces are regularly specified for public footpaths and wheelchair-accessible areas because of their anti-slip properties. The textured finish is safe underfoot and under wheels year-round.

A resin bound driveway typically costs £60–£120 per square metre fully installed, depending on whether it's an overlay onto existing tarmac/concrete (cheaper) or a full installation with new base work (more expensive). Aggregate choice and edging also affect cost. A standard 30–50sqm driveway usually costs £3,000–£6,000. We provide clear, itemised quotes after a free site visit.

Resin bound mixes aggregate and resin together before application — creating a smooth, permeable, weed-free surface that's SuDS compliant. Resin bonded scatters loose aggregate onto a layer of resin — creating a textured, non-permeable surface where stones can become loose over time. We install resin bound exclusively because it's the superior product in every measurable way: better drainage, better appearance, better durability, and no planning permission needed.

No — resin bound driveways are permeable, so they're SuDS compliant and don't require planning permission regardless of size. This is a significant advantage over impermeable surfaces like tarmac or imprinted concrete, which need permission or additional drainage when covering more than 5sqm of front garden.

Typically 2–5 days depending on whether it's an overlay or full installation, and the driveway size. The resin laying itself is usually completed in a single day — the majority of the time is in base preparation and edging. After laying, the surface needs 24–48 hours before foot traffic and 3–7 days before driving on it.

No — resin is sensitive to moisture and temperature. Installation requires dry conditions with no rain forecast for the curing period, and temperatures above 5°C. If the surface gets wet during installation, it can cause clouding, bubbling or poor adhesion. We schedule installations in suitable weather windows (typically March–November) and reschedule if conditions aren't right rather than risk a compromised finish.

Very little maintenance is needed. Sweep leaves and debris regularly to prevent organic build-up. An occasional gentle pressure wash (low pressure, fan nozzle, cool water) keeps the surface clean. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive scrubbing. Clean oil or fuel spills promptly with warm soapy water. No resealing is required. With basic care, the surface will look good for decades.

Yes — resin bound surfacing works well for patios, garden paths and pool surrounds as well as driveways. Many clients match their resin driveway with a resin patio or path for a unified, seamless look across the front and rear of the property.

Yes — many clients combine a resin driveway with new fencing, front garden landscapingbrickwork or a patio as part of a wider project. We handle everything in-house — one team, one quote.
