Patios & Paths in Gloucester & Gloucestershire
Quality Patios and Garden Paths Built to Last in Gloucester
A well-built patio or garden path can completely change how you use and enjoy your outdoor space — creating a proper area for dining, relaxing, entertaining, or simply connecting different parts of the garden. At SJS Landscaping & Gardening, we design and install patios and pathways across Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester and all surrounding areas throughout Gloucestershire, using high-quality materials on solid, properly prepared foundations to make sure everything stays level, safe and attractive for years.
The right material makes all the difference — and it depends on your property, your style and your budget. Warm-toned Indian sandstone and natural Cotswold stone suit the county’s period homes and Cotswold stone settings beautifully. Modern porcelain offers a sleek, low-maintenance contemporary look that works well on Gloucester’s newer estates. Block paving provides decorative pattern options for front patios and pathways. And budget-friendly concrete slabs still deliver a clean, durable finish when properly laid. We work with all of these and help you choose the best fit during your free site visit.
Ground conditions matter too. On the heavy clay soil common across the Severn Vale around Gloucester, Churchdown and Tewkesbury, drainage falls need to be designed into every patio to prevent pooling. On the steep hillside gardens around Stroud, stepped or terraced patios with retaining walls often make the best use of the slope. And on thin Cotswold brash around Cirencester, the free-draining ground suits most materials well — but excavation through limestone sub-surface can be harder and needs the right tools.

Our Patio & Path Services in Gloucester
New Patio Installation
We supply and install patios in porcelain, Indian sandstone, limestone, Cotswold natural stone, block paving and concrete. Every patio is laid on a properly excavated, compacted sub-base (typically 100–150mm of MOT Type 1) with a mortar bed (for natural stone and porcelain) or sand screed (for block paving), and finished with neat pointing and clean edges. We design the layout to suit your garden — whether it's a simple rectangular dining area, a wraparound patio extending from patio doors, a multi-level stepped design, or a freeform shape with curved borders.
Garden Pathways & Walkways
We create paths that improve access around the garden, connect different areas (house to patio, patio to shed, side access, front-to-rear routes) and add structure to the overall layout. Options include matching paving to your patio, contrasting materials for visual interest, stepping stones set into lawn or gravel, and narrow paths through borders. Every path is laid on a proper sub-base with correct falls so water drains away rather than pooling on the surface.
Seating & Outdoor Living Areas
A patio is more than just a hard surface — it's an outdoor room. We build dedicated seating areas, dining terraces, outdoor kitchen bases, hot tub platforms, fire pit surrounds and multi-zone layouts that turn your patio into a proper living space. Many of our Gloucestershire clients combine a patio with composite decking, raised planters, privacy fencing and integrated lighting as part of a wider garden makeover.
Edging & Border Work
Neat edging frames the patio, defines its shape, and separates it cleanly from the lawn, borders and gravel areas. We offer granite setts, contrasting block paving borders, bullnose coping stones, treated timber and metal lawn edging — depending on the look and the materials you're using. Well-chosen edging lifts the entire appearance of a patio from functional to polished.
Repairs & Re-Laying
If your existing patio has sunk, cracked, become uneven, or the pointing has failed, we can repair or re-lay the affected areas. Common causes in Gloucestershire include poor original sub-base preparation, tree root growth beneath the patio, ground heave on clay soil, and frost damage to poorly pointed joints. We assess the underlying cause — not just the symptom — and fix it properly so the problem doesn't recur. In many cases, re-laying sections or re-pointing the whole patio is more cost-effective than a full replacement.
Drainage & Ground Preparation
Proper drainage is the single biggest factor in whether a patio stays level and usable for decades or develops problems within years. Every patio we lay is built with a fall gradient (typically 1:60 to 1:80) directing water away from the building towards a lawn, border or drainage channel. On the heavy clay ground common across Gloucester and the Severn Vale, additional drainage measures (French drains, land drains, or channel drains) may be needed to prevent waterlogging. We address all of this at the ground preparation stage — before a single slab is laid.

Choosing the Right Patio Material
Porcelain
the most popular choice for modern gardens. Ultra-low water absorption makes it virtually frost-proof, stain-resistant, algae-resistant and very easy to clean. Wide range of colours and textures (stone-effect, concrete-effect, wood-effect). Ideal for contemporary properties and new-builds across Gloucester, Quedgeley and Cheltenham's newer developments. Typically £80–£130/sqm installed.
Indian Sandstone
the most popular natural stone in the UK. Warm, varied tones (buff, gold, grey, autumn blend) with natural character that softens with age. Suits both traditional and modern settings. Slightly more porous than porcelain, so benefits from sealing in Gloucestershire's wet climate. Typically £80–£130/sqm installed.
Cotswold Natural Stone
locally sourced or matching limestone that blends seamlessly with the county's honey-coloured stone architecture. The obvious choice for period properties, conservation areas and Cotswold settings around Cirencester, Stroud, Painswick and the surrounding villages. More expensive than Indian sandstone but unmatched for authenticity.
Limestone
more uniform in colour than sandstone, with a cleaner, contemporary feel. Dries quickly after rain (useful in Gloucestershire's wet climate) and is harder-wearing than sandstone. Available in grey, blue-black and cream tones.
Block Paving
versatile, decorative, available in hundreds of colours and patterns. Particularly suited to front patios, pathways and areas where a decorative pattern is wanted. Individual blocks can be replaced easily if damaged. Typically £75–£100/sqm installed.
Concrete Slabs
the most budget-friendly option. Modern concrete slabs have improved significantly — riven, smooth and textured finishes in a range of sizes and colours. Practical for larger areas where budget is the priority. Typically £50–£80/sqm installed.

How We Install a Patio
Site Visit & Design
We measure your garden, discuss layout, materials, style and budget, assess ground conditions and drainage, and provide a clear, itemised quote. We bring material samples so you can compare options against your property.
Excavation
The existing surface (old patio, turf, concrete) is removed. We excavate to the correct depth — typically 200–250mm below finished patio level — to accommodate sub-base, mortar bed and paving. All excavated material is removed from site.
Sub-Base
A 100–150mm layer of MOT Type 1 crushed stone is laid and compacted with a vibrating plate. This load-bearing foundation spreads weight evenly and prevents the patio sinking or shifting. On clay ground, we may add a geotextile membrane beneath to prevent clay contamination.
Edge Restraints
Edging is set around the perimeter first to define the patio shape and contain the paving — ensuring clean edges and preventing lateral slab movement over time.
Mortar Bed & Slab Laying
For natural stone and porcelain, a full mortar bed (cement + sharp sand) is trowelled onto the sub-base, and each slab is individually set, tapped level and aligned. For block paving, a screeded sand bed is used instead. We check levels constantly to ensure consistent drainage falls — water must flow away from the building, not pool against it.
Pointing & Jointing
Joints are filled with a suitable compound — brush-in jointing for porcelain, cement-based pointing for natural stone, kiln-dried sand for block paving. Proper pointing prevents weed growth, stabilises slabs and gives a clean, finished appearance.
Clean-Up & Handover
The patio surface is cleaned, excess mortar removed, paths swept and your garden left tidy. We advise on aftercare — allowing mortar to cure 24–48 hours before walking, and sealing natural stone if desired.

Why Choose Us for Patios & Paths?
Beautiful, Durable Patios and Walkways for Every Garden in Gloucestershire
High-Quality Craftsmanship
A patio is only as good as the groundwork beneath it. We never skip steps on excavation, compaction, sub-base depth or drainage falls — because a patio laid on poor foundations sinks, cracks and looks terrible within a couple of years. Every patio we install is built to stay level, solid and looking good for the long term.
Wide Choice of Materials
Porcelain, Indian sandstone, Cotswold stone, limestone, block paving and concrete — we work with all patio materials and help you choose the best fit for your property's style, your garden's conditions and your budget. We bring samples to every site visit.
Friendly, Reliable Local Team
We work across Gloucestershire every day and can usually arrange a site visit within a day or two. We turn up when we say we will, communicate clearly throughout the project, and leave your garden tidy at the end of every working day.
Designed Around Your Space
Every garden has different levels, shapes, soil and drainage. We design your patio to work with your garden — whether it's a flat dining terrace behind a modern home, a stepped patio on a Stroud hillside, or a curved path connecting a Cheltenham townhouse to a courtyard garden.
Part of a Bigger Project If Needed
Many clients combine a new patio with fencing, turfing, raised beds, decking or a full garden makeover. Because we handle everything in-house, the whole project is coordinated by one team and covered in one clear quote.

Patio & Path FAQ
If you’ve got questions about our services, the process or what to expect, the FAQs below should help – and if you need anything else, just give us a call.
We offer porcelain (contemporary, ultra-low maintenance), Indian sandstone (warm natural tones, the UK's most popular natural stone), Cotswold natural stone (ideal for period and conservation area properties), limestone (durable, quick-drying), block paving (decorative patterns, easy spot repairs) and concrete slabs (budget-friendly, improved modern finishes). We bring samples to your site visit so you can compare materials against your property before deciding.
Yes — we handle all excavation, levelling, compaction, sub-base installation, drainage falls and mortar bed preparation. Proper groundwork is the single most important factor in a patio lasting 20+ years without sinking, cracking or pooling water. On clay-heavy ground around Gloucester and the Severn Vale, we pay particular attention to drainage at the preparation stage.
Yes — we use frost-resistant materials, proper drainage falls, and quality pointing compounds designed to withstand Gloucestershire's wet, changeable weather. Porcelain is particularly well-suited to the local climate due to its ultra-low water absorption — it won't crack in frost, resists algae growth, and dries quickly after rain.
In most cases, yes. If the same material and colour are still available, we can extend or repair an existing patio to blend with what's already there. Where an exact match isn't possible (older materials that have been discontinued), we can suggest close alternatives or use a contrasting material deliberately as a design feature — a different-coloured border or edging, for example, can make a deliberate contrast look intentional rather than mismatched.

Patio costs depend on the size, material, ground conditions and any additional features (steps, retaining walls, drainage). As a guide: concrete slabs typically cost £50–£80/sqm installed, block paving £75–£100/sqm, and natural stone or porcelain £80–£130/sqm. A standard 20sqm patio usually costs £1,500–£3,500 fully installed. We provide clear, itemised quotes after a free site visit — no guesswork.
A standard patio (15–25sqm) typically takes 3–5 days including excavation, sub-base, laying, pointing and clean-up. Larger or more complex designs (stepped patios, retaining walls, combined projects with fencing or turfing) may take 5–10 days. We confirm the expected timeframe in your quote.
Porcelain is best if you want the lowest possible maintenance — it barely absorbs water, so it resists frost damage, staining, algae and moss far better than natural stone. It's ideal for modern properties and shaded, north-facing gardens where algae can be a problem. Indian sandstone is best if you want natural warmth, character and colour variation — it looks beautiful in traditional settings and softens with age. Both are excellent choices and cost similarly (£80–£130/sqm installed). We'll help you decide during your site visit.
Every patio is laid with a slight fall (typically 1:60 to 1:80) directing rainwater away from the building towards a lawn, border or drain. On clay-heavy ground around Gloucester, we may also install channel drains or French drains to manage excess water. Proper drainage prevents pooling, ice formation, and long-term damage to the patio's sub-base.
Yes — we install stepped and terraced patios on sloping gardens regularly, particularly across the Stroud valleys and Cotswold hillsides. This involves cutting into the slope, building retaining walls to hold back the higher ground, and creating level terraces at different heights. Stepped patios often look more impressive than flat ones — and they make much better use of a sloping garden than trying to level the entire area.
Porcelain requires almost no maintenance — an occasional pressure wash is usually all that's needed. Natural stone (sandstone, limestone) benefits from sealing after installation to reduce water absorption, staining and algae growth — especially in Gloucestershire's wet climate. Sealing is optional but recommended, and typically lasts 3–5 years before needing re-application. We can advise on the best approach for your material choice.
Absolutely — many clients combine a new patio with fencing, turfing, artificial grass, raised beds, decking or a full garden redesign. Doing everything as one project is more efficient, ensures all elements are designed together, and is usually more cost-effective than doing them separately.
Yes — we carry out patio repairs, re-pointing and re-laying across Gloucestershire. Common problems include sunken slabs (usually failed sub-base), cracked pointing (frost/age), loose or rocking slabs, weed growth through joints, and surface staining. We assess the cause and recommend whether a repair, partial re-lay or full replacement is the most cost-effective solution.
