Gardening Services in Gloucester & Gloucestershire
Gardening & Garden Maintenance in Gloucester
Keeping a garden looking its best takes regular attention — and in Gloucestershire, where the mild, wet climate drives fast growth from March right through to October, things can get out of hand quickly if you let them slip. At SJS Landscaping & Gardening, we offer reliable, year-round gardening services across Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester and all surrounding areas throughout Gloucestershire. Whether you need a regular visit to keep on top of things, a one-off seasonal tidy-up, or specialist work like hedge trimming, pruning, lopping, topping and small-scale tree felling, we take pride in leaving your garden neat, safe and enjoyable — no matter the season.
Gloucestershire gardens come in all shapes and sizes — from the mature, deep-bordered plots behind Cheltenham’s Victorian and Regency villas, to compact modern lawns on new-build estates around Quedgeley and Brockworth, steep hillside gardens across the Stroud valleys, and Cotswold cottage gardens with old hedgerows and established trees around Cirencester. We adapt our approach to every garden and every client, working carefully around existing planting, wildlife areas, raised beds and anything that matters to you.
We look after gardens for homeowners, landlords, letting agents, busy families and commercial clients across the county. Our approach is simple: turn up when we say we will, deliver a high standard of work, and treat your garden with the same care we’d give our own.

Our Gardening Services in Gloucester
Hedge Trimming & Shaping
We carry out all types of hedge trimming, from light shape-ups to full reshaping of overgrown hedges. Neat, well-maintained hedges make an enormous difference to a garden's overall appearance and curb appeal. We work with all common Gloucestershire hedge species — privet, laurel, beech, box, yew, leylandii, hawthorn and mixed native hedgerows — using the right tools and cutting technique for each type. For hedges near boundaries, we check height and positioning before cutting to avoid any issues with neighbours or planning rules. We always check for nesting birds before starting work, and we strongly recommend scheduling major hedge work outside the main bird nesting season (March to August).
Pruning, Lopping & Topping
From small shrubs and ornamental trees to larger overgrown bushes, we safely prune, lop and top growth to keep your garden healthy, well-shaped and manageable throughout the year. Proper pruning encourages stronger, healthier new growth, improves flowering, and prevents branches from encroaching on paths, fences, windows and neighbouring properties. Timing matters — many fruit trees are best pruned in winter when dormant, while flowering shrubs often benefit from pruning immediately after they finish blooming. We advise on the right time for each plant and carry out all pruning with clean, sharp tools to promote healthy healing.
Small Tree Felling
We handle small-scale tree removal when trees have become unsafe, diseased, dead, or simply too large for the space. All work is carried out safely with proper risk assessment, and we remove all timber, branches and debris as part of the job. If a tree is in a conservation area or covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) — which is common across parts of Cheltenham, Cirencester and the Cotswold villages — we'll advise you to check with the local planning authority before any work begins, as removal without consent is a legal offence. For larger trees or complex felling, we can recommend trusted specialist tree surgeons.
General Garden Maintenance
Regular visits or one-off sessions covering everything that keeps a garden looking tidy — mowing, strimming, edging, weeding, border maintenance, leaf clearance, path clearing and general tidying. We bring all our own tools and equipment, so you don't need to provide anything. This service is ideal for homeowners who want to enjoy a neat, well-maintained garden without the time commitment, and for landlords and letting agents who need rental properties kept presentable between tenancies. We're flexible — visits can be weekly, fortnightly, monthly or on an as-needed basis.
Seasonal Tidy-Ups
Perfect for spring and autumn — or whenever the garden needs a deep clean-up. We clear overgrowth, cut back dead or straggly growth, tidy borders, rake leaves, clear gutters of garden debris, and get everything looking fresh and controlled again. Spring tidy-ups prepare the garden for the growing season ahead, while autumn visits focus on cutting back spent growth, clearing fallen leaves and protecting borders before winter sets in. Many of our Gloucestershire clients book us twice a year for seasonal visits alongside their regular maintenance schedule.
Lawn Care & Grass Management
Routine mowing, edging, strimming and lawn upkeep to keep your grass healthy, level and looking sharp all season. In Gloucestershire's wet climate, lawns grow vigorously from March through October and can quickly become unkempt if not maintained regularly. We mow at the right height for the season (longer in summer to retain moisture, shorter in autumn and spring for tidiness) and edge neatly along borders, paths and driveways. If your lawn needs more than a mow — such as new turf, artificial grass, or ground preparation — we can help with that too.
Waste Removal Included
All green waste, hedge clippings, branches, leaves, old plant material and garden debris are removed and disposed of responsibly as part of every job. We never leave waste behind for you to deal with. Your garden is left clean, clear and ready to enjoy from the moment we finish. For larger clearance projects (overgrown gardens, end-of-tenancy clean-ups, site preparation for landscaping work), we handle the entire clearance and disposal in-house.

Hedge Trimming & the Bird Nesting Season
Hedge Trimming Gloucester
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is illegal to intentionally damage or destroy an active bird’s nest. The main bird nesting season in the UK runs from 1 March to 31 August, and the RSPB strongly recommends avoiding hedge trimming during this period where possible.
This doesn’t mean it’s illegal to trim your garden hedge in summer — domestic hedges aren’t covered by the agricultural hedgerow management rules — but you do need to check carefully for active nests before starting any work. If a nest is found, the hedge must be left alone until the birds have finished nesting and the young have fledged.
We always check for nesting birds before starting any hedge work, whatever the time of year. If we find an active nest, we’ll leave that section of hedge untouched and return to complete the work once the nest is no longer in use. The safest months for major hedge trimming and reshaping are September through February, when nesting has ended and most hedge species respond well to harder pruning.
If you have a hedge that falls under the High Hedges legislation (Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003) — meaning it’s over 2 metres, predominantly evergreen, and causing an issue for a neighbour’s light or enjoyment — we can help bring it under control while staying within the law.
Year-Round Garden Care Across Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire’s mild, wet climate means gardens here grow faster and need more regular attention than in drier or cooler parts of the UK. Here’s what to expect through the year and how we help:
Spring (March–May)
The busiest time in any Gloucestershire garden. Lawns start growing fast, hedges thicken quickly, borders fill out, and weeds take hold almost overnight. Spring is the time for the first lawn mow of the year, early hedge trimming (checking for nesting birds first), border weeding, cutting back any winter-damaged growth, and general tidying to get everything looking fresh for the warmer months ahead.
Summer (June–August)
The peak growing season. Regular mowing, edging, strimming and hedge maintenance keep the garden under control. Watering, deadheading and border care keep flowering plants healthy. We recommend fortnightly visits through summer for most Gloucestershire gardens — growth is fast enough that monthly visits often leave things looking overgrown between bookings.
Autumn (September–November)
The focus shifts to cutting back spent growth, clearing fallen leaves, tidying borders and preparing the garden for winter. Hedges get their final trim of the year, perennials are cut back, and any damaged or diseased branches are removed before storms and frost arrive. Autumn is also the best time for major hedge reshaping — the bird nesting season has ended and most plants respond well to harder pruning before dormancy.
Winter (December–February)
Growth slows but there's still work to be done. Fruit tree pruning is best done in winter when trees are dormant. Paths, patios and hard surfaces can be cleared and pressure-washed. Storm damage to fencing, branches and borders can be tidied up. And overgrown gardens that need a full clearance before a spring landscaping project are often best tackled through the quieter winter months when access is easier and costs are lower.

When we say we'll be there on Tuesday, we'll be there on Tuesday. Reliable, consistent service is the foundation of everything we do, and it's why clients keep us coming back season after season.
Experienced With All Garden Types
From compact front lawns on new-build estates to large, established gardens with mature hedging, specimen trees and deep borders — we adapt our approach to suit your garden, your property and your priorities. We're equally comfortable with a quick fortnightly lawn-and-hedge visit as we are with a full-day seasonal clearance of a badly overgrown plot. Nothing phases us.
Flexible Visits to Suit You
Weekly, fortnightly, monthly, seasonal or one-off — we work around your needs and your schedule. We can increase visit frequency through the fast-growing summer months and reduce it over winter when growth slows. No contracts, no tie-ins — just reliable, flexible service that adjusts to what your garden actually needs.
Fully Insured for All Work
All gardening work — including hedge trimming, pruning, lopping, topping and small-scale tree felling — is fully insured. This gives you complete peace of mind, especially for hedge and tree work where the risk of damage to property, fencing or neighbouring structures exists.
Gardening + Landscaping Under One Roof
Unlike most independent gardeners, we also offer landscaping, patios, fencing, decking, turfing, artificial grass, brickwork and all types of driveways. If your regular garden maintenance visit reveals that you need new fencing, a patio, or a full garden makeover, we can handle the entire project in-house — no need to find and coordinate separate contractors.

Gardening FAQ
If you’ve got questions about our services, the process or what to expect, the FAQs below should help – and if you need anything else, just give us a call.
Yes — we offer regular visits on a weekly, fortnightly, monthly or seasonal basis depending on what your garden needs. Most of our Gloucestershire clients opt for fortnightly visits through the growing season (March–October) and reduce to monthly over winter. We're flexible and there are no long-term contracts — you can adjust the frequency at any time.
Absolutely. We deal with overgrown and neglected gardens regularly — whether it's a rental property between tenants, a garden that hasn't been touched in months (or years), or an estate clearance. We can bring it back under control with a one-off deep clearance, then set up regular visits to keep it maintained from that point on.
Yes — waste removal is included as standard on every gardening job. Hedge clippings, branches, leaves, weeds and all garden debris are removed and disposed of responsibly. We never leave bags of waste for you to deal with. Your garden is left clean and tidy on the day we finish.
Of course. We always ask about specific plants, wildlife areas, established borders, raised beds, decorative features, bird feeders or anything else that's important to you. If there are plants you want preserved or areas you'd like us to avoid, just let us know — we take extra care around anything that matters, and we'll always check with you before removing or cutting back anything we're unsure about.
Yes — we're fully insured for all gardening work, including hedge trimming, pruning, lopping, topping and small-scale tree felling. This covers both public liability and damage to property. For larger or more complex tree work (full crown reductions, large tree felling near buildings), we can recommend trusted specialist tree surgeons we work with.
Call us on 0800 656 9671, 01452 899 402 or 07593 952 715, or fill out the contact form on this page. For regular maintenance, we'll usually arrange a quick visit to see the garden, understand what you need and agree a fair price. For one-off jobs like a tidy-up or hedge trim, we can often quote based on a description and a few photos. All quotes are free with no obligation.
Costs depend on the size of your garden, the work involved and how often you'd like us to visit. As a rough guide, a regular maintenance visit for an average-sized garden (mowing, edging, hedge trim, border tidy) typically takes 2–4 hours and is charged accordingly. We provide a clear price before any work starts — no surprises — and regular clients often benefit from consistent, agreed rates that make budgeting easy. For a one-off garden clearance or seasonal tidy-up, we'll quote based on the scope after seeing the garden.
For most Gloucestershire gardens, fortnightly visits through the spring and summer growing season (March–October) keep things in good shape. During the quieter winter months, monthly visits are usually enough. Some clients with larger gardens or fast-growing hedges prefer weekly visits through peak season. We'll recommend a frequency based on your garden's needs during our first visit — and you can adjust at any time.
Legally, domestic hedges can be trimmed year-round — but it is illegal to intentionally damage or destroy an active bird's nest under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The main nesting season runs from March to August. We always check hedges carefully for nesting activity before starting work. If a nest is found, we leave that section and return once the birds have fledged. We strongly recommend scheduling major hedge reshaping for September through February where possible.
No — we bring everything we need. Mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, loppers, hand tools, safety gear, bags for waste collection and anything else required for the job. You don't need to provide or arrange anything.
Yes — we maintain gardens for landlords, letting agents and property management companies across Gloucestershire. We can set up regular visits to keep rental properties looking presentable, carry out end-of-tenancy clearances, and respond quickly to one-off requests between tenants. We can invoice the landlord or agent directly — just let us know what works best.
If a tree is covered by a TPO or located within a conservation area, you normally need written consent from the local planning authority before carrying out any pruning, lopping or felling. This applies across parts of Cheltenham, Cirencester, Stroud and many Cotswold villages. We'll advise you to check before any work starts — and we can recommend the right process if you're unsure.
Yes — unlike most independent gardeners, we also offer full landscaping, patios & paths, fencing, composite decking, wooden decking, turfing, artificial grass, brickwork and all types of driveways. If a regular gardening visit reveals that you need a new fence, a patio, or a full garden redesign, we can handle the whole project without you needing to find another contractor.
Yes — we work year-round. Winter is quieter for general maintenance, but it's the best time for fruit tree pruning, major hedge reshaping, garden clearances, path and patio cleaning, and preparing gardens for the spring growing season. Many clients reduce their visit frequency to monthly over winter, then increase again from March onwards.
